Bobby McIntyre

Ayr United are very sad tonight to report the passing of one of our former long serving employees, Bobby McIntyre, who served as kitman for 21 years.

Bobby joined the Club initially as Kitman for the reserve team under George Caldwell in 1985 and after the retiral of long term physio/kitman at that time; Willie Wallace he took on the kit responsibilities for the First team a role he carried out with great distinction from then on.

He also was stand in physio at reserve games and was the provider of enormous wisdom to our players sent off over the years, keeping them calm once they came off. As soon as someone was red carded you could be sure Bob was at the tunnel and ready to look after them.

Faye MacLeod, wife of the late great Ally MacLeod said tonight “I am sad tonight to learn of Bobby’s passing. Ally and I were very fond of him and he will be sadly missed.”

Bob’s son Stevie was a formidable part of the 1987/88 Second Division Championship winning team and arguably one of our best ever full backs, a fact of which Bobby was always so very proud.

Long term friends and close working colleagues former Groundsman Davie Harkness and wife Dorothy said tonight “ We saw Bob a few weeks ago and this news is a great shock. He was a great friend and tremendous servant to Ayr United, He will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with Nan and her family tonight”

Bobby was always renowned come all weathers for standing at side of dugout in a Polo shirt and following the 3-0 triumph over Kilmarnock in 1999, Andy Walker dedicated the win on Sportscene that night to him as he’d made it clear in the dressing room afterwards how much the win meant to him.
For years Bobby kept himself fit jogging daily up and down the terraces in the stadium before and after his shifts. He is remembered fondly by former staff, colleagues, players and all those he came into contact with. Truly one of the Club’s great characters.

Club Chairman Lachlan Cameron commented “ In recent years loyalty in football has become very rare. Bobby showed that in abundance to Ayr United over two decades and was an inspiring character, who was always so bright and cheery. Upon his retiring in 2006 he was awarded a Testimonial dinner which in keeping with his popularity sold out in record time. My thoughts and prayers and those of everyone at the Club are with the McIntyre family tonight.”

Bob is survived by his wife Nan, daughters Patricia, Linda , Christine, sons Steven and Andrew and grandchildren.

Docherty next to sign

22 year old defensive midfielder Ross Docherty tonight put pen to paper and joined up an already impressive looking squad that manager Ian McCall is building.

Manager Ian McCall said “I watched Ross a few times last season and he impressed me every time. He is different to what we have already, a defensive midfielder who is great at breaking up play and making a pass. He also comes very highly rated. I am delighted to have him on board for this season.”

Docherty signed for Airdrie in December and played nearly every game in their excellent run of form in the second half of the season.

Goalie the next new signing

Today we can confirm the signing of 28 year old goalkeeper Greg Fleming.

Manager Ian McCall said :”I saw Greg against us twice last season and I watched him outwith our games and was impressed every time. He has also played with Peter Murphy at Carlisle. He is good from crosses and a good shot stopper and will start the season as our number 1. I am actively looking for another goalkeeper to add to the squad.”

Greg started his career with Livingston before moving to Gretna where he was a first team regular during their spell in the SPL and also at this point was selected by the Scotland under 21 side. Since then he has played for Oldham, Dunfermline, Galway, Chesterfield, Grimsby and Carlisle. Last season Greg was the number one with Stenhousemuir.
