The IRN-BRU Cup

IRN-BRU, Scotland’s other national drink, has agreed the biggest signing of the summer as it was unveiled as the new headline sponsor of the revamped Scottish Challenge Cup – which will be renamed the IRN-BRU Cup.

Following a decade of support for Scottish football, IRN-BRU’s long-standing backing of the beautiful game will continue, with a three-year sponsorship of the Cup which this season also celebrates a fresh and exciting new format.

As revealed yesterday, the new cup competition has been given extra fizz for the forthcoming 2016/17 season with the introduction of two teams each from the Welsh Premier League and Northern Ireland Football League with teams from the Highland and Lowland Leagues (four each) and all Ladbrokes Premiership under 20 teams (12) also joining to compete for the first ever national IRN-BRU Cup.

Adrian Troy, Head of Marketing at IRN-BRU, said: “We are very excited about the new IRN-BRU Cup format and the opening up of the competition cross border – bringing more of the home nations in!

“After a ten-year relationship with Scottish football, we are proud to announce our continued support by signing as the new title sponsor of the IRN-BRU Cup.
“As a brand which never does things by two halves, we can’t wait to kick off a BRU-tiful partnership and have a LOT of fun along the way!”

Neil Doncaster, SPFL Chief Executive, said: “This is another exciting day for Scottish football and we are thrilled that IRN-BRU, one of Scotland’s most celebrated brands, is supporting us on the journey. In addition to this significant sponsorship boost, the announcement of the exciting new format of the IRN-BRU Cup again shows that Scottish football has the confidence to innovate and introduce fresh ideas to our competitions.”

Paddy extends stay

PFA team of the year left back Paddy Boyle this morning put pen to paper to extend his stay at Ayr United to the end of the 2017/18 season.

Manager Ian McCall said :”Paddy is a great professional, one of the first guys I wanted here when I got the job and someone you can always rely on. I was delighted when him and Nicky were voted into team of the year as we always felt we had the best full backs in the league. When Paddy was last in the Championship there was no better left back in the league so we know he excels at this level and getting him signed up for an extra year was a huge priority of mine.”

Paddy said :”I am delighted to sign this new deal as I really enjoying playing for the club. Pre season training is less than a week away and I’m really excited to be getting back and preparing for the Championship. Obviously it will be a completely different test from last season but one we are really looking forward to.

The fans were great all season, especially away from home with the backing they gave us and it was great to see numbers increasing at Somerset Park.”

Captain Devlin signs

Club captain Nicky Devlin today signed a deal for the 2016/17 season.

Manager Ian McCall said :”This a great bit of business for the club as Nicky could easily have moved elsewhere. Since we came to the club Nicky has been one of the most consistent players and lead the club to promotion in his first season as captain.

He is a great ambassador for the club by the way he conducts himself and the way he relates to supporters, young and old, when coaching.

It’s no surprise that he was voted in the PFA League One team of the year as we always said we had the best full backs in the league.

Our supporters need to be patient as we are making sure we get the right players for the Championship and Nicky is certainly one of those.”

Nicky said :”I genuinely can’t wait to play and captain this club in the Championship. After we got promoted I had absolutely no interest in going anywhere else. It’s going to be a really tough season however we are going to be playing at some great stadiums against big clubs and I just can’t wait to get started.

Seeing the crowd here for the playoff final made my decision easy and we are going to need our fans support more than ever this season. We will need a good home record and that’s where our fans really need to get behind us and make it difficult for opposing teams.”

Player update

Ryan Stevenson will not be extending his contract with Ayr United for the 2016/17 season.

Manager Ian McCall said “I met with Stevo and made him a good offer however he has came back and said that he wishes to explore options elsewhere. We would like to thank him for his efforts while at the club in helping us achieve promotion and wish him all the best for the future.

Since the season has ended I have had a big focus on keeping certain players from last season and we have already done that and will have further news in the coming days.

We are still looking for around 5 new players and the work continues on that and we will update you immediately when we have anything confirmed.”

Doc signs new deal

Multiple end of season award winner Ross Docherty has signed a new deal for the 2016/17 season. ‘Doc’ was crucial in the club gaining promotion to the Championship.

Manager Ian McCall said :”I am absolutely delighted to get this deal done. My belief is that if we get 10 or 20% improvement in Doc, and he doesn’t get a freak injury like last season, then he will be as good as any midfielder in the Championship and that includes those at Hibs and Dundee United.

Not only is he a top player but he is a crucial part of the dressing room and well liked by everyone.  I have placed a lot of focus in getting some of the players who did a great job for us signed up for next season and he is a key signing.”

Doc said:”This was a no brainer for me, I wanted to stay with the team who got promotion and who did so well last season. I think about the start of last season and until all the injuries happened we showed exactly what this team is capable of. It’s going to be a great challenge this season and I am really looking forward to it.

The fans were another big reason to stay. I thought they were brilliant last season especially away from home when a lot of times we had more fans than the home team. And then the last game, to walk out and see that crowd was amazing and you could see the potential there and then.”

We are aware that there are some questions regarding the price increase in the top compared to last seasons. The reason for the increase is that this season the club have chosen a stunning bespoke kit that is far more expensive than last years home top. We received a large amount of complaints last season about the quality of the home top and that was part of the reason for choosing this high end top.
