Clyde match preview

Match Preview Ayr United vs. Clyde Betfred Cup Group E Tuesday 25th July 2017. Kick-off 7.45pm

Tonight (Tuesday), Ayr United can cement a top two finish in Betfred Cup Group E – and take one step closer to topping the table – with a win over League 2 side Clyde. However, Jim Chapman’s side will offer a stiff test as demonstrated by their come-from-behind win  at Dumbarton at the weekend. Second-half goals from Darren Miller and Max Wright earned Clyde a well deserved victory against the struggling Sons.

Like Ayr, Clyde have six points but have played an additional group stage match. Prior to defeating Dumbarton they edged out Peter Murphy’s Annan 2-1 at Broadwood on the opening weekend before losing out 4-2 at the hands of KIlmarnock, although they gave Lee McCulloch’s side a shock, coming back from a goal down to take the lead in the first-half.

Former Scotland international David Goodwillie missed Saturday’s game through injury, as did captain Kevin Nicoll who was suspended after seeing red at Rugby Park – both could return at Somerset Park. Striker David Gormley is no stranger to finding the back of the net and will be one to watch. Jim Chapman swapped the managerial hotseat at Annan Athletic for Clyde in the summer and has signed no fewer than seven of his former charges from the Galabankies.

Elsewhere in Group E on Tuesday, Dumbarton host Annan Athletic with both sides looking for their first point in the competition.

Ian says:”Alan Forrest won’t make tonight’s match however he will train on Thursday and hopefully be in contention for Saturday. Michael Rose is making good progress and will start light training on Thursday. Craig Reid is fit and back in the squad.

It’s a really important game so early in the season. A win may well be enough to see us qualify and we really want to keep the momentum going. This game brings a different kind of pressure and we want to ensure this ground becomes feared again so its hugely important to maintain a good home record.”

Head-to-Head (at Somerset Park): Ayr United wins – 35 Draws – 16 Clyde wins – 18

The Honest Men and the Bully Wee have met five times previously in the League Cup. There had been two wins apiece in four group stage double-headers in 1963 and 1968 but United were 6-1 winners when the sides met in August 2012. Ayr were four goals to the good through David Winters, Michael Moffat, Jonathan Tiffoney and David Sinclair before John Neill netted a late consolation only for Moffat and Sinclair to net their second goals to make it 6-1 in the 90th minute.

Last Meeting: Ayr United progressed to the sixth round of the Scottish Cup when the sides met just last season – but required a replay and extra-time. After a 1-1 draw at Somerset Park which saw Paul Cairney equalise David Gormley’s opener, it was Gormley’s turn to grab an equaliser in the replay at Broadwood, cancelling out Declan McDaid’s 11th minute strike with just two minutes left on the clock. Ian McCall’s men eventually took the win through Mick Wardrope’s injury time winner.
