One of a number of talented youngsters to have started their career at Queen’s Park, Shankland was a first-team regular for the Spiders aged just 17 and finished season 2012/13 as top goalscorer with 14 goals.

When team-mates Andrew Robertson and Aidan Connolly moved to Dundee United in July 2013, Shankland joined Aberdeen, initially featuring for the Dons’ U20 side before joining Dunfermline on loan for the latter part of his first season at Pittodrie. Seven goals in 14 appearances for the Pars convinced Derek McInnes to promote the striker to the first-team the following season and although he failed to score in 17 appearances he did score a brace in the first of two appearances for the Scotland U21s, versus Hungary in March 2015, and was rewarded with a two-year contract extension.

Loan spells at St. Mirren and Morton followed without making the breakthrough into the Aberdeen squad and Shankland departed the Dons on the expiry of his contract in the summer.

Ian McCall added Shankland to his squad in September 2017, initially on a short-term deal until January 2018. Having tried to sign Lawrence on loan the previous season, McCall’s persistence has paid off with the Glasgow-born striker starting his career at Somerset Park in superb goalscoring form, earning him November’s League 1 Player of the Month and a extended deal until the end of the season.
