United v Dundee: Matchday Live
06/02/2010
Full time: Ayr are edged out in the end after a brave battle here at Dens. Another bright start here after Tam McManus struck with the game just 11 minutes old, but Dundee were solid if un-spectacular after that and managed to get the job done.
83 mins: There's a fan in front of me yelling at Jocky Scott to "get it sorted" as apparently there's no end product to Dundee's play. Tough gig this, eh?
80 mins: Ayr send on Junior Mendes for the impressive Alastair Woodburn.
78 mins: Willie Easton clears one off the line as Ayr begin to creak at the back.
70 mins: GOAL DUNDEE. Ayr's resistance is broken as Lee Griffiths heads home from close range. The pressure hasn't been constant, but the goal was certainly coming.
63 mins: Low on goalmouth action at the moment but Dundee are certainly looking the more likely.
58 mins: First chance of the second half goes to Dundee. Griffiths with the low drive and another parry by Samson - but this time the ball rebounds to safety for Ayr.
48 mins: Bright start to the second half from Ayr. No waves of home pressure...yet.
Half-time: Ayr head for the dressing room on level terms and that's probably a fair reflection on proceedings. Another great start from Ayr at Dens - dream debut for Tam McManus with a well taken goal - and all looked good. But United have fallen four minutes short of reaching the interval with their lead intact...the question now is whether they can withstand another 45 minutes of pressure.
43 mins: Dundee now going for it and they've rattled the bar. A Harkins free kick is nodded off the woodwork and Ayr survive. Can't see who got the header from behind this big pole in the main stand.
41 mins: GOAL DUNDEE. Ah dear - so unlucky for Ayr this. Lee Griffiths streaks clear after pouncing on an error by Willie Easton, but the shot is parried by Craig Samson. However, just as the rebound looks like falling safely to Ryan McGowan, the Aussie slips in the mud and Ben Hutchinson is presented with a gift from six yards.
40 mins: Dundee win a corner - it must be their 27th of the half. But yet again they do nothing with it.
33 mins: I'M ON MY FEET FOR ALASTAIR WOODBURN. A sublime 70 yard run, beating six challenges on the way. Had Maradona done it, we'd be seeing it for decades to come. Lovely stuff.
31 mins: Passes starting to go astray now from the home side. Fair amount of frustration kicking about in the stands as well.
28 mins: Tell you what, this has been brilliant so far from Ayr. It's going to take one massive effort to last the 90 minutes at this rate, but bodies are going in where it hurts - with some tasty football to match.
22 mins: "ONE TAM MCMANUS!" cry the Ayr fans, who are loving every minute of this spectacle so far.
20 mins: Even more incredible - this time at the other end. Dundee race upfield, the Ayr marking is non-existent, and the ball is slipped to Gary Harkins who has three hours to finish, but somehow puts it wide. Astonishing.
19 mins: And it really SHOULD be 2-0 now. Douglas spills the corner to the feet of Ryan McGowan, but his shot is blocked on the line by Gary MacKenzie.
18 mins: Almost 2-0. In fact I don't know how Rab Douglas got to this. Outstanding build-up from Ayr which ends with Roberts arrowing the ball towards the top corner - Douglas somehow tipping it round for a corner.
16 mins: Very similar to the league game up here in December, when Ayr enjoyed such a good start. United are fighting like tigers in midfield, while the front two of Roberts and McManus look very lively.
And it's that man TAM MCMANUS! Great set up work by Ryan Borris down the left who drives to the byline before looking up to cut back for McManus who rifles the ball past Rab Douglas. Scenes of jubilation amongst the travelling support - and McManus certainly enjoyed that one.
11 mins: GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL AYYYYYYYRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
8 mins: OOOFT! Ayr almost snatch the lead on the counter attack as Alastair Woodburn booms a 30 yard volley just wide of the post.
7 mins: Four corners in a row for Dundee. All-out defence from the visitors right now.
3 mins: Great link-up play from McManus and Roberts leads to an early Ayr corner, but it comes to nothing.
2 mins: The most striking thing about the opening to this game is Dean Keenan's hair. Dyed blonde. Oh dear.
